About Fire Lizard Studios

I started Fire Lizard Studios because I got tired of living a plain vanilla life. My day job is doing research in computer science--I sit in a beige box and type all day. Although I am lucky enough to have a window, it's still a drab existence until you add some yarn!

Working with yarn has been a growing passion of mine for a long time. I love to crochet, knit, spin, and dye, and I love putting yarns together in fun and interesting ways. When I work with yarn, I feel alive. For a long time I was afraid to direct that energy into a business, for fear that when it became a job, it would become a drag. But I finally decided to follow my passion and take the plunge. So far, I love every minute of it! I truly believe this is what I was born to do. Why the name Fire Lizard Studios?

I named the business partially in memory of my iguana, Peep. When my ex-husband and I got him, I knew nothing about lizards and didn't think I was interested, but as I lived with Peep, I discovered that he had an incredible personality! (lizardality?) He was very determined--he knew what he wanted and went for it. He knew what he was good at (climbing, mainly), and he did it without fear and excelled at it. He knew how to take praise, and he didn't let anyone push him around. He had such spirit! I grew to love him, and I strive to exhibit these qualities myself.

That explains the lizard part; the rest of the name is about passion. Fire is the opposite of beige, and I want everything I do in this business to be from my heart and soul: fiery and passionate and joyous.

Products

I sell hand-dyed yarns, hand-knit and -crocheted items, and kits. The hand-dyed yarns are dyed using professional dyes and a professional process: the dye is wash fast, light fast, and completely set, so you never have to worry about it coming off on your hands, bleeding, running, or fading. The knit and crocheted items are made by me from my own designs. For the kits, I select yarns that speak to me and design a garment incorporating them. Each kit includes all the yarn needed to make the item and a complete pattern with clear instructions on how to make it.

When I design things, I usually start by falling in love with a yarn. Then, to justify buying it, I come up with something to make with it. I do a lot of my knitting and crochet while watching movies, talking with friends, or waiting, so I don't want to have to concentrate very hard. Therefore, the patterns in my kits involve simple stitch combinations that can be made with a minimal attention span and really let the yarn shine. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.
